Carlton Fields’ Joe Swanson Quoted in Tampa Bay Times Article on Kids’ Data Privacy Rights

Carlton Fields cybersecurity and privacy attorney Joe Swanson was quoted in a Tampa Bay Times article about a proposed bill that aims to protect teenagers’ data privacy rights.

The bill, brought by Rep. Kathy Castor, seeks to strengthen privacy rights for those who are 13-17 years old by ordering companies to obtain consent from the teenagers themselves and allowing anyone under the age of 18 to dictate how they want their data used.

Companies not complying with the new rules and regulations would be subject to fines and punitive damages.

“It’s a fairly significant potential expansion of liability," said Swanson.
