Ridesharing is a Popular Option for Healthcare Transportation, But There Are Fraud and Abuse Risks

Carlton Fields Tampa health care attorney Elizabeth Scarola was quoted in the Healthcare Finance article, “Ridesharing is a Popular Option for Healthcare Transportation, But There Are Fraud and Abuse Risks.”

As healthcare providers team up with ridesharing services to provide non-emergency transportation to patients, Scarola says there are certain things providers need to monitor, such as civil monetary penalties law and anti-kickback statutes.

“Any payment that's likely to influence the selection of a provider or supplier of medical services may be liable for civil penalties — up to $10,000 per violation,” Scarola said.

She added: "I absolutely think ridesharing is going to become more prevalent in the healthcare landscape. As we see the prevalence increasing, like any other new technology, we will see an uptick in the number of regulations to make sure patients are provided with safe services."
